Seriously, though; time for only a quick thought today. Back to accountability and BP. It dawned on me the other day that when "we" say accountability, what "we" actually mean is revenge.
Yeah. I'm not crazy about revenge. There is always a cost associated with it. If "we" let our outrage at what has happened in the Gulf take control of us, it's true, "we" will have our revenge. BP could collapse. That would make a lot of people pretty happy, I suppose.
And it would also have a pretty significant domino effect. The employees of BP would be added to the ranks of the unemployed in our country. Other exploration and production companies would suffer collateral damage.
This is going to play out however it plays out, of course. But it would be so refreshing if "we" could swallow the anger and think logically about what might happen. Some would argue that BP and perhaps the MMS failed to do that.
Doesn't mean the rest of us should follow suit.
