Drama mine.
Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at 10:56AM Hey, I'm back. The crazy-busy wasn't as crazy or as busy as I had anticipated. Isn't that always how it works, though?
I suppose I should be writing something about the Olympics. Okay, then, this: A friend and I were exchanging e-mail messages on the subject over the weekend. I asserted that I prefer the Winter Olympics to the Summer Olympics. My friend countered that, while the Winter Games are fun to watch, he believes the Summer Games present better athletes than their chilly counterpart offers.
Why? The sports are purer. Run fast, swim fast, lift heavy things, jump over stuff. Winter athletes, on the other hand, require access to more specialized training. More expensive training, in fact. I think it's an interesting point. It would be more difficult to train as a cross-country skiier if you lived in Houston, versus Calgary. Even with a Wii console.
But then, I pulled a big "in your face" by reminding my friend of the Jamaican bobsled team. Uh-huh. Take that!
Regardless of the season, though, I do enjoy watching the competition. And even though there is a healthy dose of sap covering much of it (it wouldn't be the Games without some pandering to our emotions), that hasn't spoiled it for me. Not even all the anniversary coverage of the "Miracle on Ice." Under normal conditions, I wouldn't like that sort of thing. But there's just something special about the Olympics that makes it okay to have a little bit of drama.
And if it gets to be too much, well, I can always switch to American Idol. No drama there.
