Running to stand still.*
Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 10:11AM Bear with me.
There I was, racing down a two-lane road this morning (speed limit 45 m.p.h., which I was not flagrantly violating, anyway), trying to get the 12-year-old daughter to track practice on time. Shaking my head in self-defeat, because I knew what was awaiting me.
A four-way stop at the intersection of multi-lane roads, including left-turn lanes. In short, I was on the road straight to Hell. Okay, maybe Limbo.
Didn't matter how fast I drove down that road, I was still going to have to stop.
And then I expanded the notion (as is my wont) and applied it to life. How much time do we spend racing toward stop signs**? Oh. A lot. A really, really lot. Some of those signs have been put in place by others. But the most dangerous and debilitating are the ones we have erected all by ourselves.
So, knock it off everybody. It's okay to sleep on a big decision. Hell, it's okay to sleep on a small decision. Slow down. SETTLE DOWN. I'm not suggesting we should back down, of course. Keep moving forward, but try not be in such a hurry to reach that sign.
* Props to Bono and his crew. Genius. Pure genius.
** Pet peeve alert: Stop sign. Traffic light. If red were the only color on a traffic light, we could call it a stop light. But then we'd never, ever, EVER get anywhere. Would we?

Yes, our theme: SETTLE DOWN. If only more people listened.
